Keswick Museum and Art Gallery

Keswick Museum and Art Gallery

The local museum contains manuscripts by Wordsworth and Southey and, in particular, a strange musical instrument invented and built (between 1830 and 1843) by Joseph Richardson, known as the musical stones, the "mineral xylophone", and even the "geological piano".

The Lingholm Kitchen & Walled Garden

The Lingholm Kitchen & Walled Garden

The stunning new cafe and shop looks down onto an octagonal walled garden built in a Victorian style using reclaimed materials.

Castlerigg Stone Circle

Castlerigg Stone Circle

Castlerigg with its 38 megaliths situated on grassy land near Keswick is older (5 000 years old) than the legendary Stonehenge. Its use, like that of Stonehenge, remains a mystery. The site is all the more remarkable in that it offers a view extending far out towards Thirlmere and Helvellyn to the south and Derwentwater and Keswick to the west.

Rydal Mount and Gardens

Rydal Mount and Gardens

This cottage dating back to about 1574 was enlarged as a farm house in the 18C and was home to William Wordsworth (1770-1850) from 1813 until his death, a period that saw him move from revolutionary poetry to the reactionary status of Poet Laureat.

This is where he wrote the book that was his greatest financial success, the Guide to the Lakes. The house contains his library and the ceiling to his study still painted with Renaissance motifs he had copied during a visit to Italy.
